What is a Sequence?

Learn what a Mixmax Sequence is — a multi-stage automated outreach workflow — and how it differs from templates and one-off emails.

A sequence is a multi-stage, automated outreach workflow in Mixmax. You define a series of touchpoints — emails, tasks, phone calls, or LinkedIn messages — and Mixmax sends them on a schedule to each recipient. If a recipient replies, bounces, or meets an exit condition you've configured, the sequence pauses or stops for that person automatically.

When to use a sequence

Sequences are the right tool when you need to reach multiple people with a structured, repeatable cadence. Common use cases include:

  • Cold outreach to prospects

  • Follow-up cadences after meetings or demos

  • Onboarding drip emails for new customers

  • Re-engagement campaigns for inactive contacts

Key concepts

  • Stages: Each step in the sequence — an automated email, a manual email task, a phone call task, or a LinkedIn message.

  • Recipients: The people enrolled in the sequence. You can add them manually, via CSV upload, from Salesforce, or through Rules.

  • Variables: Personalization tokens (like first name, company, or custom fields) that make each email unique to the recipient.

  • Exit criteria: Conditions that automatically stop the sequence for a recipient — for example, when they reply or book a meeting.

How sequences differ from other Mixmax features

Sequences are not one-off emails or templates. A template is a reusable email draft you insert into a single message. A sequence is an entire multi-step workflow that runs automatically over days or weeks. Each recipient progresses through the stages independently.
