Sequences are available on the Mixmax Small Business plan and above. Check out our pricing page for more information.
When recipients are removed from a sequence, they are considered exited from the sequence and will show that way in the Recipients view for the specific sequence. There are several different ways users can be removed from a sequence, described below.
Default options
Below are the ways recipients will be removed from sequences by default:
The Recipient replied to your Sequence
By default, follow-up stages are set to go out if you don't receive a reply. If you keep these defaults for your sequence, the recipients will automatically be exited when they respond to one of your stages.

The message to the Recipient bounced
Any message that bounces will result in the recipient being removed from the sequence immediately. Bounced messages will be indicated next to the recipient in your Sequence reports.
For more details, see how Mixmax handles bounces.
The Recipient clicked an Unsubscribe link in your Sequence
When a recipient clicks the unsubscribe link, they'll automatically be removed from the sequence and added to your unsubscribed list. This prevents recipients from being added to later sequences created by you or others on your team.
The Recipient belongs to an unsubscribed domain
Recipients who belong to a domain that is unsubscribed from your sequences will be removed automatically. To learn more, check out how Workspace Admins can unsubscribe entire domains.
The Recipient received all of the stages of your Sequence
If they receive every stage, they're considered exited. Any exited recipients will not be reactivated if you add more stages after they have exited.
The Sender manually removes the Recipient
As the sender, you can also remove an active recipient from a sequence either in the Sequence recipients report or in your Outbox.
The Sender manually followed up
If the sender manually sends a message in the sequence thread, the recipient will be removed from the sequence.
Advanced options
These options all pertain to the Settings section for each sequence:
Prevent sending
The settings in the Recipients tab listed below can prevent recipients from being added to a sequence.
Allow senders to add Recipients who have already received this Sequence
By default, this option is checked and will prevent a recipient from receiving the same sequence multiple times. Check it if you want recipients to be able to receive the same sequence.
Block Recipients from being Active in more than one of my Sequences at a time
When selected, we’ll prevent you from adding this user to another sequence simultaneously. If the recipient is already active in another sequence with this setting selected, Mixmax will automatically remove them when you attempt to add the user to another sequence.
Block Recipients from being Active in more than one Sequence at a time by any of the following Groups
Similar to the above, when this is selected by another sequence you own or another sequence of somebody else in your Group, Mixmax will prevent you from adding the same recipient to multiple sequences simultaneously. This is helpful if you want to make sure your contacts aren't getting too many emails from your Group.
Exit Recipients
The settings in the Exit Criteria tab listed below allow Mixmax users to adjust when a sequence recipient is exited from a sequence.
Remove the recipient whenever any sender receives an email from that recipient, whether or not it’s a reply
When this option is selected, the recipients you upload will exit from the sequence when you receive any email from them, whether or not it pertains to the sequence(s) they're in. If delegated sending is used to send the sequence, emails to the delegated address or the person who uploaded the recipient will exit the recipient.
Example: [email protected] activates a sequence with [email protected] as a recipient. [email protected] sends an unrelated email to [email protected]. [email protected] will exit the sequence if this setting is enabled.
Remove the recipient whenever any sender books a meeting with that recipient via Mixmax
When this option is selected, the recipients you upload will be removed from the sequence if they book a meeting with the sender via Mixmax. This includes meetings scheduled in another thread using any Mixmax calendar feature. If delegated sending is used to send the sequence, meetings booked with the delegated address or the person who uploaded the recipient will exit the recipient.
Example: [email protected] activates a sequence with [email protected] and [email protected] as recipients. [email protected] also sends [email protected] a separate email with his calendar link. [email protected] books a meeting with Mark's calendar link. If this setting is enabled, [email protected] will exit the sequence.
Automatically exit all the sender’s recipients that share a domain with that recipient
This setting is related to the Remove the recipient whenever any sender books a meeting with that recipient via Mixmax setting. When this option is selected, the recipients you upload will be removed from the sequence if any recipient with the same domain books a meeting with you via Mixmax. This includes meetings scheduled in another thread using any Mixmax calendar feature. If delegated sending is used to send the sequence, meetings booked with the delegated address or the person who uploaded the recipient will exit the recipient.
Example: [email protected] activates a sequence with [email protected], [email protected], and [email protected] as recipients. [email protected] also sends [email protected] a separate email with his calendar link. [email protected] books a meeting with Mark's calendar link. If this setting is enabled, [email protected] and [email protected] will exit the sequence because they share a domain.
Remove all of the sender’s recipients from the same domain, if any recipient from that domain responds to a sequence email
When this option is selected, the recipients you upload will exit from the sequence when you receive a reply to your sequence from any recipient with the same domain. If delegated sending is used to send the sequence, replies to the delegated address or the person who uploaded the recipients will exit the recipients.
Example: [email protected] activates a sequence with [email protected], [email protected], and [email protected] as recipients. [email protected] replies to Mark's sequence email. [email protected] and [email protected] will both exit the sequence if this setting is enabled because they share a domain.
