When recipients are removed from a Sequence, they are marked as exited and appear as such in the Recipients view for that Sequence. You can remove recipients from a Sequence in several ways, as described below.
Default options
Below are the ways recipients are removed from Sequences by default:
The recipient replied to your Sequence
By default, follow-up stages are sent if you don't receive a reply. If you keep these defaults in your Sequence, recipients will automatically be exited when they respond to one of your stages.

The message to the recipient hard bounced
Any message that hard bounces will immediately remove the recipient from the Sequence. Bounced messages will be indicated next to the recipient in your Sequence reports.

The recipient clicked an Unsubscribe link in your Sequence
When a recipient clicks the unsubscribe link, Mixmax automatically removes them from the Sequence and adds them to your unsubscribed list. This prevents recipients from being added to any Sequences you or others on your team create in the future.
The recipient belongs to an unsubscribed domain
Recipients in a domain that is unsubscribed from your Sequences will be removed automatically. To learn more, see how Workspace Admins can unsubscribe entire domains.
The recipient received all of the stages of your Sequence
If they reach every stage, they're considered exited. Exited recipients will not be reactivated if you add more stages after they exit.
The Sender manually removes the recipient
As the sender, you can also remove an active recipient from a Sequence either from the Sequence recipients report or from your Outbox.
The Sender manually followed up
If the sender manually sends a message in the Sequence thread, the recipient will be removed from the Sequence.
If a recipient has exited a Sequence but you’d like to follow up in the same thread, you can create a new Sequence and send it as a reply in Gmail. Open the original email thread in Gmail, click Reply, and insert the new Sequence to continue the conversation without starting a new thread.
Exit recipients
The settings in the Exit Criteria section below allow Mixmax users to adjust when a Sequence recipient exits a Sequence.
The Exit Criteria settings will override the stage-level settings you have configured.
Automatically exit recipients when they email the sender, regardless if it's a reply to this Sequence
When this option is selected, recipients will exit the Sequence when you receive any email from them, regardless of whether it pertains to the Sequence(s) they're in. If you use delegated sending to send the Sequence, emails sent to the delegated address or to the person who uploaded the recipient will cause the recipient to exit the Sequence.
Example: [email protected] activates a Sequence for [email protected] as a recipient. [email protected] sends an unrelated email to [email protected]. If this setting is enabled, [email protected] will exit the Sequence.
Automatically exit recipients when they book a meeting via Mixmax with the sender
When you select this option, Mixmax will remove recipients from the Sequence if they book a meeting with the sender via Mixmax. This includes meetings scheduled in another thread using any Mixmax calendar feature. If you use delegated sending to send the Sequence, meetings booked with the delegated address or with the person who added the recipient will cause the recipient to exit the Sequence.
This setting applies only to meetings booked via Mixmax calendar links.
It also works when you use a Mixmax calendar link that does not belong to the Sequence sender (e.g., in a round-robin use case or when you're using a colleague's calendar link). Enable this setting to automatically remove recipients who RSVP to those meetings.
Example: [email protected] activates a Sequence with [email protected] and [email protected] as recipients. [email protected] also sends [email protected] a separate email with his calendar link. [email protected] books a meeting using Mark's calendar link. If this setting is enabled, [email protected] will exit the Sequence.
Also exit all recipients in the same domain. This includes when a colleague books using a forwarded meeting link.
This setting is related to the 'Automatically exit recipients when they book a meeting via Mixmax with the sender' setting. When you select this option, the recipients you upload will be removed from the Sequence if anyone at that recipient's company domain books a meeting with you via Mixmax. This includes meetings scheduled in another thread using any Mixmax calendar feature, as well as meetings booked by a colleague who isn't in the Sequence but uses a meeting link your recipient forwarded to them. If you use delegated sending to send the Sequence, meetings booked with the delegated address or with the person who added the recipient will cause the recipient to exit the Sequence.
This applies to bookings made through a link in a message the Sequence sent. Bookings with no connection to a Sequence email, such as a cold outbound booking link, don't trigger a domain exit.
Example 1: [email protected] activates a Sequence with [email protected], [email protected], and [email protected] as recipients. [email protected] also sends [email protected] a separate email with his calendar link. [email protected] books a meeting using Mark's calendar link. If this setting is enabled, [email protected] and [email protected] will exit the Sequence because they share a domain.
Example 2: Mark Sequences Jennifer and Steven at example.com. Jennifer forwards Mark's calendar link to her colleague [email protected], who isn't in the Sequence. Alex books. Jennifer and Steven both exit.
Automatically exit recipients that share the same domain with another recipient who replied to this Sequence
When this option is selected, the recipients you upload will exit the Sequence when you receive a reply to your Sequence from any recipient on the same domain. If you use delegated sending to send the Sequence, replies to the delegated address or to the person who added the recipients will cause the recipient to exit the Sequence.
Example: [email protected] activates a Sequence for [email protected], [email protected], and [email protected]. [email protected] replies to Mark's Sequence email. Because [email protected] and [email protected] share a domain, both will exit the Sequence.
